How BYU-Idaho Students Can Make Volunteering Abroad Their Internship

Written by Jen King | 10/24/19 3:16 PM

You've got your heart set on spending a semester volunteering abroad ... but you don't want to interrupt your education. Sound familiar? We can help!

Getting school credit or an internship is the answer — you'll be able to travel the world (plus teach English abroad) AND get school credit for it. Sounds pretty awesome, right?

You could go the BYUI study abroad route, but that option can often be expensive and keep you from going abroad at all. Why not try out a semester abroad with ILP?

Did you know past ILP volunteers have been approved to receive internship credit while they volunteer abroad through International Language Programs? That means ILP is already on an approved internship list at BYU-I , aka, it makes your life even easier.

Here's how:

1. Start here. Get a basic overview of what internships involve.

2. You need to meet with your department internship coordinator  and talk about the requirements to ensure that your volunteer service with ILP fits.

3. Go through the process of getting your internship approved here.

But first, know the basic requirements:

BYU-Idaho requires that all internships must...

1. Be related to your major.
2. Be registered for credit.
3. Be approved by your department.

If an internship teaching English abroad isn't right for your major, there's always the option of taking online classes or deferring. Here's how to defer from BYUI — it's no big deal, we promise.
