When I picked up my life and decided to travel around China for a semester abroad I knew I was ready for a huge adventure because I didn't speak even a tiny bit of Mandarin - yeah I even Googled how to say hello the night before I left.
The Pearl Market in Beijing, China is a must visit if you want to find killer deals on basically everything you could ever want. Souvenirs, clothes, makeup, shoes, jewelry, pearls and much, much more!
Beijing is BIG and has a ton to see and do. Public bus schedules can be tricky to figure out, but lucky for you the metro is a easy and cheap way to get around to Beijing's must sees! Getting to the Pearl Market, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and Olympic Park has never been easier!
The best part about spending an entire semester abroad for your volunteer trip is that you see and do waaaaaaay more than you could on a quick 2 week trip! You get to live like the locals do: buy handmade jewelry from the cute elderly lady across the road, become a chopsticks pro, and ride the local bus to your favorite park on Saturday. You might as well try out the Chinese websites that all the locals use, too ... right?
You’ll need to be brave because this tram ride is on top of one of the tallest structures in all of China (second only to the tower in Shanghai!) … which is also the 4th tallest free standing tower in the whole world! You’ll get some awesome panoramic pictures while you’re 1,492 feet up in the air, that’s for sure.
Coming home from a semester with ILP means coming home with lots of pictures, amazing memories with your ILP group and a few more stamps in your passports (and a tiny bit of a broken heart after saying goodbye to your kiddos!). But for one ILP China volunteer, coming back meant teaching professionally — back in Asia!

Okay, we're all about saving money because the more you save on the little things the more money you have to do important things like cool activities, eating good food and seeing amazing sights during your time abroad! Here's a hack that will totally help you during your trip abroad. Use it as often as you can because a couple bucks here and there adds up.
The decision to volunteer for a semester with International Language Programs (ILP) is different for everyone. Sometimes it's a long process of getting ready and making up your mind and other times it happens quick.
